Distribution

Israel, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.


Diet:

Herbivore, grasses, bushes, juicy fruits and juicy bulbs


Facts

Habitat: dry valleys, desert

 

Gestation: 8 months, 1 cub


Social structure: they live in herds (usually approx. 10 individuals but sometimes they may be even 100), with a dominant male, females and some young. Solitary bachelor males have also been observed.


max weight: male: 75 kg, female: 70kg.


Dimensions: till the shoulder: 102 cm, max length: 235cm


Population in the wild: 6.000-7.000 individuals in protected areas and approx. 1000 in the wild


Lifespan: 20 years


Threats: illegal poaching for sale to private collectors, hunting for their meat and other parts of the body for use in traditional medicine and as a trophy, habitat reduction due to drought and over-grazing.


IUCN Status: Vulnerable


Did you know that:

  1. Their sense of smell is very good, allowing them to locate rainfall and fresh vegetation and they may wander long distances in search of pasture.  One animal is known to have covered 93km in 18 hours.
  2. Their color helps to reflect sunlight to help them reduce heat transfer toward their body
  3. Their hooves are wide allowing them to walk on the sand without sinking.
  4. One of the females leads the herd, whereas the male is at the tail watching for preditors.
