Central Africa, from West to East.
Lives in hot, arid regions, where permanent water supplies are usually lacking. During the hot periods, it digs and buries itself in cavities up to 3m long.
Can reach up to 100kg in weight and up to 1m in length and is the biggest tortoise of the African mainland.
The species is vulnerable due to habitat loss and pet trade. Many tortoises are also captured by local trades for food and some are traded in Japan for longevity potions.
