Bhutan, China, Hong Kong, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Viet Nam.


Omnivore. Insects (caterpillars, butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, flies), snails, spiders, millipedes, berries, seeds.


Habitat: Evergreen, pine and mixed forest, forest edge, abandoned cultivation, tea plantations, bamboo clumps.

Incubation: 11-14 days / 3-5 eggs

Social structure: Flocks of 20 - 100 birds.

Weight: 18-28g

Dimensions: 14-15cm  


Lifespan:  15 under human care


Estimated population in the wild: Locally common

Threats: Habitat destruction and capture for the cagebird trade

IUCN Status: Least Concern
