SE Europe to E Asia, Canary Is, NW Africa, Ethiopian Highlands.


Omnivorous. Grasses, leaves, seeds and stems of plants and sedges, grain, rice, shoots and vegetables. Terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates (worms, insects, crustaceans, molluscs), small fish and amphibians.


Habitat:  Mostly in freshwater, saline and brackish lakes and rivers in open country.

Incubation: 28-29 days, 8-9 eggs

Social structure: Pairs during breeding period. Small or large flocks during the autumn and the winter.

Weight: male 1200-1640g, female 925-1500g

Dimensions:  61-71cm

Lifespan: ~10

Estimated population in the wild: 170,000 - 220,000 individuals

IUCN Status: Least concern.

Threats:  Hunting, loss and degradation of inland wetlands, Avian influenza outbreaks.
