Distribution

Mauritania, east to Ethiopia, and south through East Africa to South Africa.


Diet:

Carrion, from which it eats muscles and organ tissue and bone fragments of larger carcasses.


Facts

Lives in open woodlands, savannas and steppes in altitudes of up to 3,000m. Their excellent eyesight enables them to spot food from high in the air. Up to 200 White-backed Vultures may gather at a carcass, but larger carcasses, such as elephants may attract a thousand. Fights during feeding are inevitable.
Wing span is up to 2,18m.

Near threatened. Population declining.
You can only see this species in our park in the bird of prey flight.
