Bali, Indonesia.


Diet:

Omnivore. Seeds, fruits, nectar, insects (such as caterpillars, ants, termites, dragonflies and grasshoppers), occasionally worms and small reptiles.


Facts

Habitat:  Open woodland.

Incubation: 12-15 days, 2-3 eggs


Social structure: Pairs or flocks of up to 30 birds.


Weight: 70-115g


Dimensions:  25cm


Lifespan: 4-10 in the wild, 20 under human care 


Estimated population in the wild: <50


IUCN Status: Critically Endangered


Threats:  Illegal trapping for the cage-bird trade, habitat loss.


Did you know that:

  1. It is one of the rarest birds in the world and  was described and named as recently as 1910 by English ornithologist Lord Walter Rothschild from whom it gains its specific name.
  2. It is one of the rarest birds in the world. In 2001 only 6 birds had remained in the wild. The wild population has been maintained only by release of captive birds. Due to very successful captive breeding the species has been saved from extinction.
  3. They sometimes perch on the backs of ungulates, and forage for insects.
