Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Arabian Peninsula.


Carnivore. Arthropods (such as scorpions, spiders and beetles), small mammals (such as moles, rodents, hares, hedgehogs and bats), birds, reptiles, amphibians, snails, freshwater crabs, occasionally carrion.


Habitat: Rocky desert outcrops, open woodland, savannah.

Incubation:  2-4 eggs, incubated for 30-32 days.

Social structure: Solitary or in pairs.

Weight:  male 620g max, female 850g max

Dimensions:  45cm length,  wingspan 100 cm.

Lifespan:  At least 10 years

Estimated population in the wild:  Widespread and common

Threats: There are no major threats to this species.

IUCN Status: Least Concern
