Colombia, Venezuela, Guianas S to Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, NW Argentina.


Diet:

Omnivore. Grasses, sedges, various plants, aquatic plant tubers, berries, invertebrates (insects, worms, small molluscs).


Facts

Habitat:  Forested sides of rivers and damp clearings, wet savannas, edges of large freshwater wetlands.
 

Incubation: 28-30 days / 6-10 eggs
 

Social structure: pairs, family groups or large groups of up to 20 birds.
 

Weight: male 1950gr max, female 1440gr max
 

Dimensions: 61-66cm
 

Lifespan: 20+ under human care
 

Estimated population in the wild: 10,000-25,000
 

Threats: Hunting, habitat destruction.
 

IUCN Status: Near Threatened.
 

Did you know that:

During their territorial display they expand their chest, pull back their heads, flap their wings, and then rush towards a rival animal. They take such an upright position that it looks as if they might fall over backwards.
