Females of most species of hornbill seal themselves in a tree cavity leaving a narrow slit through which the male feeds her and the chicks, until they are ready to leave the nest. The male feeds the female by regurgitation. The female molts while breeding and becomes temporarily flightless.
It is the smallest Hornbill species in the Philippines.
