A little Patagonian mara, a new arrival at the Park

A little Patagonian mara was added to the Park's family on March 28th 2011.

They live in South America, mostly Argentina and feed with grasses and low shrubs.

Maras have very unusual reproductive behaviour, especially for mammals. Monogamous for life, Maras breed two or three times a year. The female will give birth to a litter of 1-3 young after a 3 months gestation period. The young are well developed at birth and are quickly placed in a communal den, usually made from a hole or tunnel abandoned by another animal. This den is home to the offspring of as many as 15 pairs. The female uses scent to locate her young and drives off offspring other than her own.
